In 1952, the director of the Census Bureau and the National Archivist
agreed that keeping census records private for 72 years balanced public
release of federal records with the tradition of confidentiality ...
72 years having been considered at the time to be longer than most
lifespans. In keeping with that policy, the 1940 census records were
finally released by the US National Archives on Monday, April 2, 2012.
These newly released records have yet to be fully indexed. Until that
has been accomplished, the following collections of original documents
are being made available here. Text listing for North Manitou Island and
South Manitou Island compiled by ManitouIslandArchives.Org, April 2012.
